Mexican miners established San Andreas in 1848, naming it after Saint Andrew. The town became county seat in 1866 and gained notoriety in 1883 when the infamous stagecoach robber Black Bart was tried in the courthouse.

Mexican Settlement
Mexican gold miners establish San Andreas and name it after Saint Andrew. By the early 1850s, 1,500 miners worked the gullies.
1852
Gold Nugget Found
A massive gold nugget is discovered and sold to Wells Fargo for $12,000, bringing fame to the camp.
1866
County Seat
San Andreas becomes the permanent county seat, taking the designation from Mokelumne Hill.
1883
Black Bart Trial
The notorious 'gentleman bandit' Charles Boles is tried and convicted in the courthouse, sentenced to 6 years in San Quentin.
